EMU Lab lecture by Ignazio Visco
Recent developments in artificial intelligence have a range of implications for economic policy, particularly for financial stability, the effectiveness of macroeconomic policies, competition and income distribution. Significant productivity gains may be accompanied by an increase in the concentration of market power and a strengthening of the trend towards a shift in income from labour to capital. This may have significant consequences for aggregate demand, inequality and market regulation.
A potential conflict is therefore emerging between the urgent need for redistributive policies, antitrust measures and international cooperation, and the difficulties currently hindering their implementation – difficulties which must be overcome in order to promote and maintain economic and social development that is truly equitable and sustainable.
Ignazio Visco is an Italian economist, central banker, and Governor of the Bank of Italy from 2011 to 2023.
The event will be held in Palazzo Buontalenti, Via Cavour 65, Firenze
