The fonds CM3/NEGO1 – Negotiations for the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) 1955–1957 is now available in digital format on the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) website.
This means that the full set of Council files held at the HAEU can now be accessed remotely. CM3/NEGO1 has long been a valuable resource for the research community.
The fonds, consisting of more than 400 files, covers the period from the Messina Conference of June 1955, which revived the movement for European integration among the six founding countries of the European Coal and Steel Community, through the work of the Intergovernmental Committee chaired by Paul-Henri Spaak, Belgium’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Spaak Committee’s reports paved the way to the 1957 Treaties of Rome, establishing the EEC and EURATOM.
