Connecting knowledge and action: the Robert Schuman Centre’s role at the EUI

As part of the #uniquelyEUI anniversary series, academics at the Robert Schuman Centre reflect on what it means to do research that is cutting edge and policy relevant, as well as the tensions, breakthroughs, and bridges that have defined decades of interdisciplinary scholarship.

06 May 2026 | Research story

What does it mean to do research that is both cutting edge and policy relevant? And how do you build an institution that bridges disciplines, institutions, and society without losing its intellectual rigour?

The answer to these questions sits at the heart of everything the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies does. While the policy world moves fast – and requires answers at a similar pace – theoretically grounded research takes time and structure. In this episode, Erik Jones, Director of the Robert Schuman Centre (RSCAS), sits down with Adrienne Héritier, who first joined the RSCAS in 1995, and Iva Nenadić, Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom, to discuss how this delicate balance has been achieved: a plural, international, and interdisciplinary network that relies on groundbreaking data collection and analysis to provide useful advice for European citizens, institutions, and governments.
