The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) announces the publication of the digital files and inventories for the latest transfer of documents from the Council of the European Union. The transfer included 1119 files under the series Legal Acts 1988 and 1074 files under the series Legal Acts 1989. All of the files are available in digital format.

The Council of the European Union is one of the main legislative bodies of the European Union and has a decisive role in its decision-making processes. The legal acts issues are the result of inter-governmental and inter-institutional negotiation and cooperation.

More than 2000 files from 1988 and 1989 document a wide range of regulations, directives and decisions issued by the Council. Matters addressed in these legal acts include but are not limited to the management of common tariff controls; the fixing of prices; campaigns for commercialisation of European products; the common organisation of the market in Community products; controls over a wide range of product sectors; the application of social security regimes; and relations with third countries by means of meetings between the EEC and third countries’ committees.

All of the files have been digitalised and may be consulted in the HAEU’s database.

Following the Council Regulation 2015/496, amending the original Archives Regulation 354/83, all EU institutions, bodies and agencies are obliged to deposit their archives at the HAEU. The HAEU preserves and makes accessible the archival holdings of EU institutions and agencies according to the 30 years rule governing access to archives of the European Union.
