The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) is pleased to announce the opening of the historical records of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The records are digitally accessible in the HAEU database to registered users.
Items available for online consultation cover the years 1994 and 1995 and comprise records of the Management Board (formerly known as the Administrative Board until March 2016), the Budget Committee, and presidential decisions relating to various aspects of the administration and operation of the EUIPO.
The agency transferred its initial archival files to Florence at the end of 2025 in accordance with Council Regulation No. 2015/496 (EU) and the subsequent framework agreement between the European Commission and the European University Institute, whereby EU institutions are required to deposit their historical archives at the HAEU. EUIPO is the sixth European Union agency to deposit its archives in Florence.
The records of the EUIPO preserved at the HAEU tell the story of a modern agency: paper records are complemented by digitised copies, with some records available only in digital format. The Office also deposited audiovisual materials with its holdings; these may be consulted on-site in Florence.
About EUIPO
The European Union Intellectual Property Office is a decentralised agency of the European Union, based in Alicante, Spain. Established in 1994 as the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), it was renamed the EUIPO in 2016. The Office is responsible for managing EU trademarks, registered EU designs and geographical indications for craft and industrial products, and plays an important role in promoting intellectual property protection and cooperation across Europe and internationally.
