This represents a significant achievement for the EUI, which has obtained registration for all of its sites, confirming the Institute’s commitment to high standards of environmental management across its operations.

EMAS is a voluntary environmental management instrument developed by the European Commission to recognise organisations that demonstrate strong environmental performance, transparency and full compliance with environmental legislation. By joining this rigorous European framework, the EUI is now formally recognised among organisations that meet demanding standards in environmental governance and continuous improvement.

The registration crowns a process launched in 2020 with the formal commitment of the Institute’s top management and completed in 2025 with the adoption of the Environmental Policy. Through its Environmental Management System, the EUI has structured its efforts around key priorities including energy, water, waste, office materials, mobility, procurement and greenhouse gas emissions, while also promoting community engagement and biodiversity-related initiatives across its campuses.

“This achievement marks the culmination of a project that began several years ago. Back in 2018, when the EUI hosted for the first time the annual meeting of the European agencies affiliated with the Greening Network, whose main objective was precisely to promote the EMAS registration," explains Laura Bechi, User Support, Quality and Sustainability Management Coordinator.

"This milestone carries great significance for everyone who has worked on it over the years, and especially for the EUI as an institution", Laura continues. "It is the result of a massive collective effort and represents an extraordinary starting point for making the EUI a place where environmental sustainability is not only recognised as a research topic of crucial importance, but is also reflected in the everyday management of operational activities across the campus."

The EMAS registration complements the ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems already achieved in July 2025.
