The European University Institute (EUI) inaugurated the exhibition "Pierre Werner (1913–2002) – A Life Dedicated to Luxembourg and Europe" to mark the 55th anniversary of the Werner Report, a milestone in the creation of the euro and European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
Comprising 18 trilingual panels in English, French and German, the exhibition draws extensively on the Werner family’s private collections alongside archival material from Luxembourg and the European Union institutions, as well as the Historical Archives of the European Union. Through photographs, documents, correspondence and previously unpublished sources, it presents Werner not only as a statesman, but also as a husband, father, intellectual and committed European. The exhibit, brought to life through Henri Werner’s combined scholarly and artistic work, was developed in partnership with Europe Direct - University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH). It is complementary to Pierre Werner’s memoirs, Itinéraires luxembourgeois et européens – Pierre Werner: évolutions et souvenirs 1945 – 1985, recently issued in a new edition by Peter Lang as a result of the the cooperation of the Werner Family Archives and Europe Direct - University of Luxembourg.
In her speech inaugurating the exhibit, Viviane Reding described Pierre Werner as “an exceptional man,” highlighting his lifelong dedication to Luxembourg and European unity, security and prosperity. She noted his superb diplomatic capacity to reconcile conflicting viewpoints, and his steadfast determination to see EMU to fruition.
Panels from "Pierre Werner (1913–2002) – A Life Dedicated to Luxembourg and Europe" will be on view at the Historical Archives of the European Union at Villa Salviati through the end of December 2025.
