Herman van de Werfhorst appointed as Chair in Sociology

The Department of Political and Social Sciences is delighted to announce that Professor Herman van de Werfhorst will be joining the EUI in September 2022 as the next holder of the Chair in Sociology.

The SPS Department is delighted to welcome Herman van de Werfhorst as the new Chair in Sociology as of September 2022. Herman comes to the EUI from the University of Amsterdam, where he is currently Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department. He is a member of the Education Council of the Netherlands and of the Social-Scientific Council of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as Co-Director of the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies. He is particularly well-known for his research and analysis of the effects of educational tracking, and has many publications on inequalities in educational attainment, labour market outcomes, and stratification more generally, in leading journals including the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, PNAS, British Journal of Sociology, Social Science & Medicine, and Social Forces.

At the EUI, Professor van de Werfhorst will teach, amongst other seminars, the Foundations of Stratification. He will engage with the CLIC Centre (Comparative Life Course & Inequality Research Centre), as well as with the EUI's Inequality Working Group (IWG) and the Inequality, Welfare and Social Justice Interdisciplinary Research Cluster. Werfhorst will also supervise PhD dissertations and conduct research.
