The European University Institute is saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, on 22 September 2023.
Italian policymaker, Giorgio Napolitano, served as a member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO).
Napolitano is remembered as an extraordinary pro-European and as being deeply committed to democracy and a stronger Italy in Europe. In her statement on this death, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, shared, "As President of the Republic, he called for international co-responsibility to ensure peace. A call stronger today than ever."
Giorgio Napolitano was a guest speaker in the panel 'Alcide De Gasperi: A Vision for Europe - Then and Now', of the 2015 edition of the EUI's annual flagship conference The State of the Union. He also visited the EUI on numerous occasions, including to follow the works at Villa Salviati.
The European University Institute extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends for their loss.
