Julia Schulte-Cloos has received this year’s “Rising Star Award” from the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), one of the leading scholarly societies for political scientists in Europe. The award is presented every year to outstanding PhD or early career researchers who are considered to have an especially promising future in the fields of politics and international relations.
Schulte-Cloos, who defended her PhD thesis at the Department of Political and Social Studies in July 2019, expressed feeling honoured to have received the award and “very excited that my early academic achievements have been recognised in this way.”
In appointing her as their 2021 “Rising Star”, the ECPR jury remarked on her teaching and her stellar publication record. The jury also elaborated on her generous service to the profession, mentioning how, as an early career scholar pursuing her PhD, Schulte-Cloos was involved in the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS), as well as in the EUI community as a tutor for the data clinic, and principal organiser of the EUI Quantitative Methods Working Group for three years.
“The EUI has provided me with an extremely favourable environment to start an academic career,” she shared, adding that “being part of the SPS department, with so many inspiring scholars and talented peers, has been a true privilege.”
Julia Schulte-Cloos is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), investigating how political conflict transforms when democratic norms come under pressure. She has held various visiting positions at a number of academic institutions in different countries and her publications have come out in leading journals such as Electoral Studies, European Union Politics, Journal of European Public Policy, Party Politics and Political Behavior.
