The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) in Florence has recently received a small archival deposit from the late Simon J. Nuttall, a figure whose career spanned European diplomacy and academia. The collection, consisting of just seven files, was deposited by Andrew Duff during the submission of his own papers in late 2022.
The Simon Nuttall collection covers the years 1995 to 2003, a period when Nuttall was visiting fellow at the Centre for International Studies at the London School of Economics and a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. These years marked the culmination of his career in European affairs.
Nuttall’s earlier work in Brussels started following the UK’s accession to the European Communities, when he was appointed to the Office of the Clerk of the Commission. He later served as European Correspondent for European Political Cooperation (1981–1988) and subsequently as Director for Relations with the Far East—posts that undoubtedly informed his later academic writing.
His practical experience in European foreign policy is evident in his scholarly contributions, notably his publications European Political Co-operation and European Foreign Policy.
This small archival collection will be of particular interest to those studying the evolution of European foreign policy and the interplay between diplomacy and scholarship.
