A visual and archival exploration of the European University Institute

From early debates on European cooperation and a shared academic space to the negotiations that led to its establishment in Florence in 1972 and inauguration in 1976, the European University Institute has evolved alongside European integration, shaped by intellectual ambition and institutional growth. Over the decades, the development of its research centres, the creation of innovative academic programmes, and the expansion of its campus across new villas have added to its ever-emerging identity. Together, these elements have built the history of the EUI, bringing it to the present day as it celebrates 50 years of fostering European scholarship, collaboration, and critical thought.

To celebrate this anniversary, the HAEU has published The European University Institute at 50: Exploring its Visual History, a digital exhibition hosted on its multimedia platform. The exhibition invites users to explore the visual archives collected over the years and to reflect on how the institution has documented, represented, and interpreted its own history. The material retraces the trajectory of the Institute from its conceptual beginnings in the post-war period to its consolidation as an international center for research and intellectual exchange. The selection also reflects the key principles guiding the archival treatment of the HAEU’s visual collections, combining aesthetic quality with documentary value to highlight both visually compelling images and those capturing significant moments, actors, and spaces in the Institute’s history.

Organised into thematic and chronological sections - Origins, Foundation, Expansion, Consolidation and the EUI today - the exhibition not only traces institutional milestones but also reflects broader dynamics of European integration and academic exchange. Beyond these key moments, the exhibition highlights the everyday life of the EUI’s academic community. Images of ceremonies, official visits, conferences and informal moments on campus reveal the rhythms of an international environment shaped by mobility, collaboration, and exchange, while documenting key figures, spaces and events across the decades.

An archival note on institutional photography

The archival value of institutional photography is one of the themes that emerges from the online exhibition. Often produced by unknown authors and outside the traditional canon of artistic photography, these images constitute an essential part of Europe’s visual heritage. They show how institutions represent themselves through recurring visual conventions, such as handshakes, speeches and ceremonial gestures, while also capturing unintended details of everyday life, from dress codes and social practices to technological infrastructures. Spanning from analogue black-and-white prints to born-digital images, the collection reflects the technological and aesthetic transformations that have shaped photographic practices since the 1950s. It also highlights challenges of preservation, including color degradation and digital obsolescence, underlining the importance of long-term archival strategies.

Ultimately, the exhibition invites viewers to explore the visual archives collected over the years and to reflect on how the institution has documented, represented, and interpreted its own history, offering a considered perspective on its institutional development and the evolving ways in which its memory has been preserved and communicated.

A physical exhibit at the Badia Fiesolana

A further, carefully curated selection of 22 photographs will also be displayed in the Badia Fiesolana canteen as part of the official programme of commemorations marking the 50th anniversary of the EUI. The exhibit will be inaugurated on 10 April at 15:00, and is expected to run through summer 2026.
