Professor Mair is a leading expert and recognised social scientist whose research explores how organisations address complex societal challenges and drive social innovation. She holds a PhD in Management from INSEAD and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations from Johns Hopkins SAIS. Currently, she is Professor of Organisation, Strategy and Leadership at the Hertie School in Berlin and Co-Director of the Global Innovation for Impact Lab at Stanford University. Her award-winning scholarship, published in leading journals has challenged established paradigms and advanced our understanding of ‘organising for society’ to address issues such as inequality, poverty and democracy.

“I see the Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG) as uniquely positioned to respond to today’s urgent need for innovation and collaboration across borders“, Professor Mair said. “I'm eager to join an extraordinary community of colleagues, students and fellows, all committed to tackling Europe’s most pressing challenges. Leading the STG means engaging in meaningful work that bridges research and practice, and helping to shape the next generation of leaders dedicated to Europe’s future.”

Beyond academia, Mair has advised the European Commission, the OECD and national governments, and served on advisory boards of major philanthropic and civil society organisations. She has also played a key role in creating interdisciplinary education programmes and building international partnerships.

EUI President Patrizia Nanz on the appointment: "I warmly welcome Johanna to the EUI and the STG. She brings international experience, scholarly distinction, and a clear vision of the role the STG can play in Europe and beyond. I am confident that, under her leadership, the STG will continue to flourish as a space where ideas and practice meet, and where future leaders are prepared to face the challenges ahead."
