The EUI Department of Economics takes centre stage in the fourth episode of the #uniquelyEUI anniversary series. In a discussion filmed at the EUI Library, Head of Department Fabrizia Mealli joins doctoral researchers Julia Müller and Michele Castegini to discuss the defining features of the EUI PhD programme in economics, including the close connection between researchers and faculty, the rigorous formal training, and the vibrant, international, and interactive academic culture.
Linking past and present, the EUI academics reflect on the generations of influential economists who have taught at the department and on the "intellectual intensity" that remains its hallmark.
The three scholars also emphasise the deep commitment to policy-relevant research. This practical focus explains why many alumni develop careers in prestigious international organisations, while those in academia continue to break new ground in economic theory.
Finally, Professor Mealli, the first female to lead the department, highlights the current strong representation of women among the current faculty, particularly in fields where women have historically been underrepresented.
This video forms part of an anniversary series celebrating 50 years of research excellence at the EUI. Each episode highlights what defines the EUI academic units and how their legacies are carried forward today. Follow the series under #uniquelyEUI.
