News - welcome reception ay 25-26

The European University Institute's (EUI) annual Welcome Reception took place on 3 September and celebrated the arrival of 100 PhD researchers, around 50 master's students and 80 fellows who are beginning their academic journey at the Institute. As per annual tradition, the reception took place in the astounding setting of the Roman Theatre of Fiesole and was organised in collaboration with Fiesole’s City Council. The event offered newcomers a valuable opportunity to get to know each other and reach out to the wider EUI community, combining cultural heritage with academic dialogue.

EUI President Patrizia Nanz warmly welcomed the new cohorts stating that “being able to celebrate this moment together, and with the community of Fiesole, makes it feel truly like home.’’ In her introduction speech, Cristina Scaletti, Mayor of Fiesole, emphasised the importance of building bridges across culture and education to tackle Europe’s biggest challenges.

During the evening, participants took part in guided tours of the archaeological area and museum, enjoyed a musical interlude by Fiesole’s Municipal Philharmonic Society, and tested their knowledge with quizzes on the EUI and Fiesole before gathering for refreshments and a toast. These activities marked the beginning of the academic year in a spirit of inclusion and cooperation, reaffirming the EUI’s commitment to promoting dialogue, diversity, and excellence across different disciplines and nationalities.

Kunhao Yang, a fourth-year PhD student in the Law Department at the EUI, welcomed the incoming students with some warm advice, reminding them to “explore our beautiful campus. Climb up to the villas, stroll through the gardens, catch the sunset over Florence from Badia Fiesolana or Villa Salviati, and don’t miss the stunning ceilings of Palazzo Buontalenti.” Elena Casali, student representative for the Master’s in Transnational Governance, echoed this advice, “remember to lift your eyes from the screen, to look beyond the books, and to appreciate where you have come to be – a place that carries the tangible presence of those who came before."

The reception marked the start of a milestone year: in 2026, the EUI will commemorate its 50th anniversary since opening its doors to researchers. This will be a unique opportunity both to reflect on the Institute’s achievements over the past five decades and to consider the continuing importance of research and engagement with society in navigating the uncertainties of the 21st century. Throughout the academic year, the EUI will host a series of events and activities, culminating in a major anniversary celebration on 7 and 8 May 2026.

In the meantime, we encourage you to stay connected and participate in the following events:

  • The Distinguished Giorgio La Pira lecture will be given by Teresa Ribera (Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition of the European Commission) on 11 September.
  • The EUI Conversations with Dacia Maraini on 22 September, will see one of the most important voices of Italian literature coming to meet our community and the public.
  • The Yves Meny Annual Lecture on 25 September with Professor Bernard Hoekman. This lecture will focus on the shifting dynamics in global trade and their influence on the EU’s strategies worldwide.
