The Department of Political and Social Sciences is delighted to welcome back Professor Simon Hix of the London School of Economics and Political Science, who has joined the EUI in September 2021, as the next Stein Rokkan Chair in Comparative Politics.

Professor Hix, who obtained a PhD in Political and Social Sciences at the EUI in 1995, is internationally known for the rigour and cutting-edge nature of his research. He is widely read and cited and has an excellent track record in post-graduate research and training.

He is an expert on comparative political behaviour and institutions, especially parties and elections, parliamentary behaviour, electoral systems, and European Union institutions and politics. His research employs a sophisticated mix of quantitative and experimental methods, while taking theory and history seriously.

Professor Hix has written four books and published articles in top US and European journals in political science, including American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, British Journal of Political Science, and European Journal of Political Research. He also regularly contributes to the public debate via the media.

Prior to joining the EUI, Hix was Pro-Director for Research and Harold Laski Professor of Political Science at LSE; he is also a Fellow of the British Academy, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts – all titles and positions that attest to the quality of his research and his passion for post-graduate research and training.
