Biography

Jonathan Zeitlin is Distinguished Faculty Professor of Public Policy and Governance Emeritus in the Political Science Department at the University of Amsterdam, and Founding Academic Director Emeritus of the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES). His research centres on new forms of experimentalist governance within and beyond the European Union, with particular emphasis on market regulation, environmental protection, and social welfare. He has (co)authored or (co)edited 17 books and more than 100 book chapters and articles in a wide range of journals, including Regulation & Governance, Journal of European Public Policy, West European Politics, European Union Politics, JCMS, and Politics & Society. From 2019-2021, he led a workpackage on ‘Alternatives to Differentiated Integration’ in the RSC-based Horizon 2020 project on ‘Integrating Diversity in the European Union (InDivEU). As a Schuman Centre Fellow, he will study experimentalist approaches to regulation of health, safety, and environmental risks, focusing on innovative institutions such as post-market monitoring, incident notification, and rapid alert systems. Other current areas of research include the governance of the EU’s post-Covid Recovery and Resilience Facility; the relationship between uniform rules and legitimate diversity within integrated markets (with a particular focus on financial regulation); and EU external action against illegal logging and deforestation.
