Biography

I am Professor of Sociology at the European University Institute. I joined the EUI in February 2018, while on leave from Stockholm University. I took my PhD from the EUI in 2007, and I was a postdoc at Yale before moving to Stockholm in 2009. I was visiting professor at the University of Turku (2010-18). At the EUI, I was the SPS department’s Director of Graduate Studies (2020-22), Dean of Postdoctoral Studies and Director of the Max Weber Programme (2022-25).

My broad research interests cover life course research, the causes and consequences of family dynamics and structure, social stratification, and health. When and how do inequalities in education, health and labour market outcomes emerge and how do they develop over the life course? Why do rates of divorce and separation differ by education and what are the consequences of these differences for adults and children? How does social mobility and social change shape political outcomes?

These are examples of questions that I research, usually in collaboration with both junior and more senior colleagues. I use quantitative data and a range of econometric, demographic and epidemiological methods. Recent publications include analyses of the effects of parental separation, unemployment persistence among the children of migrants, single parents’ living arrangements and employment, educational inequality, and cohort-driven changes in Brexit support.

I supervise dissertations across a wide range of topics, which are not limited to the research topics mentioned above. Likewise, the dissertations that I supervise use both quantitative and qualitative data and methods.

I am also co-director of the Comparative Life Course and Inequality Research Centre (CLIC), and of Florence Population Studies, and editor-in-chief of Advances in Life Course Research.
