Biography

Matthew Loveless is a Research Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. Currently, he is working with the Transnational project of Prof Hooghe and Prof. Marks as well as several projects related to institutional legitimacy. Formerly a Jean Monnet Fellow and member of the Center for Media Pluralism and Freedom at the European University Institute, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Bologna. He is co-founder of the Center for Research and Social Progress (cersp.org).
He has held positions at Georgetown University (US), the University of Oxford (Nuffield Fellow, St. Antony’s), and the University of Kent (UK). His research has focused on the transition to democracy in Eastern Europe and now examines several topics related to how individuals perceive and make sense of politics in Europe. His most recently publications have engaged challenges to the future of Europe: right-party competition, inequality, political participation, climate change, and legitimacy. His work has been published in the Journal of Politics, Political Studies, Political Research Quarterly, International Journal of Communication, European Journal of Political Research, World Development, Electoral Studies, Comparative Politics, Government & Opposition, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of European Public Policy, and Europe-Asia Studies.
