Andrés received a PhD in Sociology from Duke University, an MA in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences from Columbia University, and bachelor's degrees in sociology and economics from Universidad del Rosario (Bogotá).His primary research examines the formalisation of decision-making: how written rules and information systems are created, used, and transformed over time. He is interested in understanding how formalisation shapes the allocation of attention, cognitive effort, discretion, and trust in organisations. His methodological training is centred around statistical modelling and computational social science (including the analysis of network and text data).During his Max Weber Fellowship, he will complete a series of interrelated projects corresponding to these themes. Andrés is particularly interested in operationalising the concepts of authority and discretion for the purpose of improving the way in which we measure the causal effect of rules in decision-making.
