Biography

Christopher Treiblmayr is a historian and gender researcher. He teaches at the University of Vienna and other institutions like the Universities of Salzburg and Klagenfurt. In addition, he directs research projects at QWIEN – Center for Queer History, Vienna. His fields of research and teaching include gender and queer studies, contemporary and media history, human rights and civil society as well as Orientalism research.

Christopher’s current project “Men of the ‘Orient’” combines historical research in masculinities, queer gender concepts, and Orientalism. The project aims to deconstruct stereotypical images of masculinity and male sexuality of the “Orient” in the German-speaking regions from the mid-19th century up to the recent past, thus providing the first consistent interweaving of the model of “hegemonic masculinity” (Raewyn Connell) with conceptions of “Orientalism” for this period of European history.
