Fernand Braudel Fellow

Department of Law

Biography

Dr Inga Martinkute is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University, Lithuania, where she teaches Public International Law and International Dispute Settlement. She holds a PhD in Law from the National University of Singapore.

Her research focuses on international investment law, international dispute settlement, state responsibility, and the relationship between domestic legal systems and international law. Her scholarship combines comparative legal analysis with theoretical and practical perspectives, examining the interaction between international legal obligations, domestic regulatory autonomy, and the protection of individual rights.

She is the author of Reconciling Domestic Property Regimes and International Investment Protection: Origins, Comparisons and Contestations (Brill Nijhoff, 2026). The monograph critically examines the conceptual foundations of international investment protection, exploring how different domestic property regimes balance private property rights with broader societal interests and questioning the assumptions underlying universal standards of investment protection.

Alongside her academic career, Dr Martinkute has more than twenty years of experience in international dispute resolution and legal practice. She has represented states and corporate clients in complex international commercial and investment arbitrations, particularly in the energy, infrastructure, and regulated industries. She has been involved in proceedings before the International Court of Justice, she is a member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators and a recommended arbitrator at the Vilnius Court of Commercial Arbitration.

She actively participates in international academic and professional networks, contributing to scholarly conferences, expert discussions, and debates. Her current Nordic Council-funded research project, conducted in collaboration with Scandinavian universities, examines the intersection of artificial intelligence, law, and governance.
