Biography

Nicholas Milanese is a founding director of European Alternatives, a unique transnational civil society organisation promoting democracy, equality and culture beyond the nation-state. Since 2006 European Alternatives has been developing pathbreaking cross-border research, training, assemblies, advocacy, festivals and cultural activities which contribute to the emergence of a rich ecosystem transnational and trans-local democracy.

He is the co-author of Citizens of Nowhere: How to Save Europe from Itself (Zedbooks, 2018) and co-editor of Illiberal Democracies in Europe: an authoritarian response to the crisis of liberalism (George Washington UP, 2023).

He has held visiting research positions at PUC Rio De Janeiro, UNAM Mexico City and IWM, Vienna, designed education programs in the MENA region, and sat on expert and advisory groups of the European Commission, European External Action Service and German Federal Agency for Civic Education.

As a Visiting Fellow at the STG, he will work on the development of a permanent people’s assembly for Europe, continue to co-chair the EUI-STG Democracy Forum, work on a transnational model of citizenship education and continue to develop the conceptual basis for a planetary politics of desire.
