The Library Catalogue

The Library Catalogue is the central starting-point for locating books, connecting to online journals, and accessing statistical databases.  All paper and electronic resources are included in the Library Catalogue.

The left menu of the Catalogue allows users to request books for delivery to the Economics Department and to view loan records, renew books, and save/export search results.

Users may also use the Encore interface to locate Library holdings.

The Statistics Collection

The EUI Data Portal is the main gateway to the Statistics Collection.

A description of the Statistics Collection is on this Library page.

70 major electronic statistical databases are available via the Data Portal. There are 41  Macro data sets and 29 Micro data sets.

Each of these 70 resources has an individual description page providing (i) data description (ii) time period coverage (iii) links to external support – eg. online guides and user networks, and (iv) specific instructions on how to access each data resource.

The EUI Library also provides a selection of statistics in paper format. All materials with the Catalogue prefix ~STA are located in the 5 Statistics Rooms in the upper wing of the Library (ascend the short stairway from the Law Room).

Economics Journals

The Catalogue links to online full-texts of economics journals and gives details of paper holdings. Shelfmarks of journals have the prefix 'SER.' Paper journals are located on the lower (garden) floor of the Badia Library.

Photocopies of older articles that are only available on paper, may be requested for delivery  to the Economics Department from the Main Library. Please check the Catalogue prior to requesting delivery. Send the volume number, issue and page-range of the article required, to econlibrary@eui.eu.

In the event that an article is not available at the EUI, readers should use the inter-library loan (article) service.  Where possible, a PDF version will be delivered within 36 hours.

The Library subscribes to many bibliographic databases including (inter alia) EconLit; FirstSearch, ArticleFirst, Web of Knowledge/SSCI – as well as the cross-journal search capacities of Ingenta, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect,  JSTOR and Sage.

Economics Books

Books on Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics and Statistical Theory are located on the entry-level of the Badia Library (shelfmarks LIB 330 to 659). Economic History is located on the lower (garden) floor in the 900 range.

A list of major reference works in Economics and Statistics is available on this Library page. Note that the New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics is also available online.

Books may be borrowed for up to 30 days (renewable three times if not requested by another reader). Overdue books are subject to fines. Readers should regularly check their accounts for overdue books (especially approaching holiday periods). Readers may renew loans at the left menu of the Catalogue (unless another patron has placed a 'hold'). Where there are multiple requests, the Library acquires extra copies for the VSP Reference Library.

Books may be requested for delivery to the Economics Department (Villa San Paolo) by completing the 'VSP Book Delivery Service' form at the left side of the Catalogue.  This form is also available on the Economics Collection homepage.  Library Books may be returned from the Department to the Main Library by depositing them in the white box outside the VSP Porter's Office – or by personally taking them to the Badia Library issue desk. Free-standing CD-roms, DVDs and older (paper format) WPs may also be requested for delivery.

Books not in the collection may be ordered via inter-library loan. Before using this service, Economists are encouraged to suggest titles for acquisition by the Library. New and older works – in any language – may be suggested by writing to econlibrary@eui.eu.

Economics Department Library Services

The Departmental Reference Library ('The VSP Library') is located on the ground floor of the Villa San Paolo, beside the elevator shaft. The Economics & Statistics Information Specialist is present in the Economics Department on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons (ext.2904) from 3pm to 6pm.

455 heavily-used course texts, software manuals, handbooks and dictionaries are available in the VSP Library.  These volumes may only be consulted inside the VSP complex (Villa San Paolo & Villa San Paolino) which EUI economists may access 24-hours per day with card. All users should be familiar with the VSP Rules and Procedures, and be attentive to the security of this important in-Department resource.

When consulting books and manuals at the VSP, follow these procedures scrupulously:

Check out: Remove the pink loan slip from the book endpaper; fill in the user name and loan date. Place the slip back on the shelf where the book was located.
Check in: Take the loan slip from the shelf, put a mark on the 'in' column, put the slip back in the book and replace the book on the shelf.

Books cannot be removed from the VSP complex (there are no exceptions).

There are no overnight or weekend loans.

All books must be available at the VSP Library each morning.

The rules apply equally to Researchers, Professors and Fellows.

Each Friday during term, photocopies of the covers of new Economics books are displayed on the notice board in the VSP Library.  If a new book is still being processed, a 'hold' may be placed via the Request link at the top of the Catalogue record. All EUI economists (Departmental, MWP and RSCAS) receive a list of new titles in the e-Bulletin each Friday.

The computer in the VSP Library corridor is reserved for the exclusive use of the Economics Information Specialist.

Economics Working Papers

Although most working papers in Economics are available via internet – some important series are only available under license.  These series must be accessed via the Library Catalogue. Examples include: NBER, CEPR, FMG and SSRN.

Online working papers in Economics are available via RePEcEconomists Online (launched in 2010); Google Scholar and TechReps.

EUI Economics Department working papers are available via the Library Catalogue, Cadmus (the EUI institutional repository); Economists Online and RePEc.

EUI Faculty, Researchers and Fellows should submit bibliographical details of their publications while at the EUI, for inclusion in the Cadmus institutional repository (from which the President's Annual Report bibliography is generated).  Guidelines for submissions are on this page.

Weekly e-Bulletin from the Library

Every Friday, Economists and Users of Statistics receive an e-Bulletin with news of Economics & Statistics collection development; a list of new economics books; data updates, and tips on how to access statistical data from EUI Library databases and the World Wide Web.

Economists are automatically included in the e-Bulletin mailshot. Scholars from other EUI Departments and Centres who would like to receive the e-Bulletin, should send a note to econlibrary@eui.eu. The e-Bulletin is only delivered to ~eui.eu domain addresses.

Collection Profile and Other Resources

The Economics Collection Profile is updated annually (i) to reflect the evolution of literature and data in scholarly Economics and (ii) to respond to the specific research and teaching requirements of the EUI Economics Department, the Max Weber Programme, the RSCAS and other users of Economics literature and statistical data campus-wide.

The Library Software Manuals page lists the locations of manuals most frequently used for economic research.  Where possible, PDF versions are linked from this page. Suggestions for new manuals and editions are very welcome. Write to econlibrary@eui.eu.

The Subject Specialist maintains two online directories of internet resources: (i) Resources for Academic Economists, and (ii) Statistics on the World Wide Web.

Newspapers for Economists

The Economist, The Financial Times, the International Herald Tribune and La Reppublica are available on the shelf outside the VSP Departmental café.

The full text of The Economist is available via this Catalogue link.

Copies of The Financial Times, Il Sole 24 Ore and The Economist are also available at the Badia Library issue desk.

A wide range of online newspaper content is available via the WestlawLexis Nexis, and ESO databases.  A newspaper archive is held in the Microform Collection on the ground (garden) floor of the Badia Library.
