Seminar description
Dedicated to first year researchers whose topic is in erly modern history, the Training Seminar is designed to introduce them to the basic practicalities of historical research, by investigating the use of archival and other primary sources, the methods appropriate for the use of different types of source material, developing research questions and hypotheses in dialogue with the sources, defining one’s agenda of research questions, evaluating existing historiography, structuring analysis and narrative etc. The training seminar is a forum in which first-year researchers who are preparing their February and June paper papers can present their sources, hypotheses and ideas to their peers and to the professor leading the seminar in order to get critical feedback.
Programme
Session 1: 8 January
Introduction: seminar’s approach and plan; the February (and the June) paper(s); schedule of presentations.
Session 2: 15 January
Libraries, archives and the early modern historian.
Session 3: 22 January
E-resources, digital primary sources and databases for early modernists: session with Serge Noiret (Information Specialist, HEC) and Kalle Kananoja (MWF).
Session 4: 29 January
The dissertation in early modern history: A conversation with 3 recent Ph Ds - Ananya Chakravarti (MWF), Sinem Casale (Visiting Fellow, HEC) and Irene Fattacciu (Vasco da Gama Fellow, HEC).
Session 5: 5 February
Writing and publishing articles and book reviews in the field.
Sessions 6 to 8: 12, 19, 26 February
Presentations of draft February papers by researchers.
