The Environmental Studies Programme was established in 1999 under the direction of Professor Yves Mény and coordinated during the its first two years by Dr. Tanja A. Börzel. It continues and consolidates the long-standing tradition of environmental-policy research at the EUI; it is linked to the inter-disciplinary researcher-held Working Group on Environmental Studies (WGES).

The Programme operates under the supervision of the Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, Prof. Helen Wallace. It organises occasional seminars and conferences in collaboration with other RSCAS Programmes.

In 2001/02, ten years after the landmark Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, the Programme at present focuses on the concept of "sustainability" and its role in the internal and external policy-making of the European Union.
