Purpose
The meritocracy has received serious criticism over the past decade: it personalizes success and failure, it legitimizes inequalities, and it has empirically not materialized as elites find ways to keep their children ahead in education. Nevertheless, meritocratic society has also historically opened up opportuntities to education for wider populations. In this workshop we discuss conceptions of merit and meritocracy as found in the literature, critiques, theories of social justice in relation to the meritocracy, and empirical research to study it.
