Purpose
This course teaches students how to effectively use theory in the everyday practice of social and political science research. It covers a broad array of approaches to theory, including different versions of empirical theorising in quantitative studies (theory-driven hypothesis testing, model building, mechanism-based explanation), in qualitative and interpretivist approaches (e.g. theory comparison, case study and theory development, theory in ethnographic research), as well as non-empirical theorising (concept analysis, ontological theorising). Researchers are expected to bring concrete research to the workshop.
The full syllabus will be available on the webpage: https://www.eui.eu/en/academic-units/political-and-social-sciences/seminars-and-teaching.
