Description

Over the last decade we have witnessed a rapid surge in the number of persons coming from disadvantaged and traditionally marginalized groups, including women, sexually and gender diverse people, youth and racialized minorities reach positions of public authority. This raises the question as to whether new forms of leadership are coming to the fore by those breaking new glass ceilings or whether the old styles are simply being replicated by newcomers who have been adequately socialized into the old ways of power struggles, negotiation and decision- making skills. To explore this question we will interview Katherine Zappone, an American-Irish independent politician who served as Minister for Children and Your Affairs from May 2016 to June 2020. Zappone became Ireland's first openly lesbian government Minister and the first Minister to have been openly gay at the time of appointment to cabinet. Previously she and her wife had also been heavily involved in the campaign for same sex marriage in Ireland, including through strategic litigation and grassroot mobilization.
