Public Leadership in International Trade: how to Prepare for the next Big Crisis (STG-MA-M7-PLT23)

This seminar will explore key features of the leadership exerted by governments, civil society or businesses in developing global responses to the challenges facing interntional trade

The seminar will look at three recent examples where this leadership has led to action within the WTO, and more broadly in national and regional trade policy responses:

• the 2008 financial crisis and the response to prevent a collapse of international trade;
• efforts to advance more inclusive trade through women in trade;
• the response to the Covid pandemic and the impact of the war in Ukraine

In examining these examples the seminar will:

• Explore the type of leadership that led to action regarding access to medicines, women and trade, food crises and responses to the 2008 financial  crisis;
• It will draw on the experience of leading actors taking part in the shaping of these responses and will therefore give hands-on knowledge and experience.
