Impact of Covid-19 on the Italian Academic Job Market in the Social Sciences and Humanities

The Italian Academic Job Market in the Social Sciences and Humanities has not suffered substantial changes in relation to the Covid-19 health emergency.

Responses adopted by the Government and the National Funding Agency

  • The main measures that the Italian government has incentivized through regulatory instruments are:

The 'Fund for the emergency needs of the University system, of higher artistic education institutions, music and movement institutions and research institutions' has increased in 62 million euros for the year 2020 with the purpose of supporting students who, given the emergency in progress, require remote access to databases and to bibliographic resources, the purchase of digital devices, or for access to digital platforms for research or distance learning. There is also an increase in resource funding for universities of 200 million euros.

The extension of the duration of the postdoc research grants for a period similar to the emergency, within the limits of resources relating to the respective research projects or, in any case, in the context of their budget availability.

Apart from that, the ordinary fund for research institutions and institutions, increased by 50 million euros per year starting from the year 2021 for the hiring of researchers in public research institutions. The resources referred to in this paragraph are shared between public research bodies.

For the Projects of Relevant Interest National (PRIN) the Fund for Scientific and Technological Research Investments (FIRST) increased for the year 2021 of 250 million and for the year 2022 of 300 million euro.

Lastly, the Fund for financing ordinary university, is increased by the year 2021, of 100 million euros and, starting from the year 2022, of 200 million euros.
