At the Graduate Institute, Stephanie is Professor of International Relations and heads its International Relations/Political Science Department. She is an international-relations theorist and security studies specialist with expertise on the European Union; international organisations and regime complexity; the UN; NATO and alliance relations; peacekeeping and peacebuilding; and global ordering.

Hofmann’s first book European Security in NATO's Shadow is path-breaking, arguing that European security can best be understood through recourse to broader theories of international relations and comparative politics, and when we take the domestic politics of security cooperation seriously. Beyond the book, Stephanie has published in leading international relations and political science and European security/studies journals such as the Journal of Conflict Resolution; Journal of Peace Research; Perspectives on Politics; European Journal of International Relations; International Affairs; Cooperation and Conflict; and the Journal of Common Market Studies.

In Political and Social Sciences, Professor Hofmann will teach courses on international relations theory, international organisation, and European security; at the Schuman Centre, she will be heading the Europe in the World research area in its Global Governance Programme.
