Stata Cannot Activate or Update

Problem

Stata Cannot Activate or Update.

Technical Explanation

Windows' UAC does not allow Stata to write to the installation folder, even if the user account has Administrator rights.

Without this permission, you cannot create a license file to enable Stata, or install directly the updates downloaded from the StataCorp using the -update all- or -update swap- commands.

Platform / Software Affected

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7

Solution

  1. Click on Start, browse to Stata, right-click on the icon and select Run as administrator to launch Stata:

    StataUpdate(1)
Figure 1: Run Stata as Administrator
  2. Depending on your security settings you may get the following message:

    StataUpdate(2)
    Figure 2: Confirm running Stata
  3. Click Yes to proceed.
  4. A standard dialog may appear, through which you can enter information about your current license. It should now be able to create a license file, and you should be able to update Stata.
