Training and Learning

Training for EUI members

The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Online Course is available to all those who do research, teach, or work at the EUI.

This online course serves as an initial step in providing the EUI community with answers to questions regarding EDI. More importantly, it aims to inspire new ideas and foster conversations on how the EUI, as an institution, can promote practices and behaviors that advance equity, diversity and inclusion.

The course is structured around four video modules, each addressing key aspects of EDI: foundational concepts; unconscious bias and gender stereotypes; cultural diversity and stereotypes; and strategies for preventing discrimination, harassment, and bullying.

Offering this course is a key action toward fulfilling the implementation of recommendations outlined in the EUI policy on Harassment, Sexual Harassment and Bullying, in the EUI Gender Equality Plan 2022-2025, and in the EUI Ethnic and Racial Equality Plan 2023-2026.

Learning about EDI

Learning about EDI fosters a better understanding of the diverse perspectives and experiences of EUI researchers, students, faculty and staff. It promotes reflection on conscious and unconscious biases in favour of or against topics, individuals, or groups, which are shaped by experience, ingrained thought patterns, assumptions, or interpretations. These biases can influence judgments and decisions, often without awareness.

Below is a list of EUI and external resources aimed at increasing awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion:

EDI-related initiatives and resources

  • Library Café 2025: Books selected by Library information specialists and the research community regarding key dates and topics, including EDI-related ones (e.g. Pride Month, Women’s History Month, Black History Month).
  • Harvard Implicit Association: Test to self-assess your unconscious bias.

Disability and accessibility

Gender equality and Women’s rights

Parents, families and carers

  • Health, Family and Recreation: latest EUI provisions and support for parents, families and carers.
  • Welcome and life in Florence: the Welcome Office provides practical information for EUI members on various areas, including relevant ones for parents and families, to help them settle in Florence.

Racial justice and decolonial practices

  • Black History Month Events: List of current and past events.
  • Whiteness at the EUI: Paper discussing the effects of an overwhelmingly white demography on EUI research and working culture, authored by members of the EUI community.
  • The Doll Test: This video shows a psychological experiment designed in the 1940s in the USA to test the degree of marginalisation felt by African American children caused by prejudice, discrimination, and racial segregation.

Sexual orientation, Gender identity and expression

  • List of LGBTQ+ terms: Not sure what language to use to refer to the LGBTQ+ community, or how to define a key term? Stonewall UK provides a list of suggested definitions for key terms relating to LGBTQ+ identities and experiences.
  • What are pronouns? A short video illustrating why pronouns matter and why using the correct ones represents an easy step to respect and support trans and non-binary people.
