Gender Mainstreaming Training News

While full gender equality has yet to be achieved, the European Union is actively taking steps to improve the situation, drawing on the country-specific recommendations of several Member States. The EUI engages actively in this commitment by contributing to the promotion of this European core value through training and skills-development programmes.

The “Gender Mainstreaming in Public Policy and Budgeting” project was designed in response to several Member States’ requests for technical support. Launched in October 2022 with an opening conference in Florence, the project aims at supporting nine beneficiary authorities in seven Member States, at central or decentralised level, including administrations in charge of gender equality policies, sectorial policies or in charge of budgetary processes.

The project just rounded off the second activity of its introductory phase, a 15-hours online training on Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB). Under the expert guidance of EUI Research Fellow Costanza Hermanin, participants shared their experience with the evolution of their policies, and gained valuable insights into the benefits of implementing gender-responsive policies and budgeting. Trained by international experts, the course participants also benefitted from the pedagogic material developed by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) and the EUI with the support of Expertise France.

"Training international civil servants on gender budgeting is a mission and a honour, more than a job. It means contributing actively to a more equal world, through an innovative tool that can be adopted for every sector of activity”, proudly commented Costanza Hermanin.

Another 30 hours of training on gender impact assessment will be delivered to two cohorts of policy professionals starting in March 2023.

Yet, there is more to come: the next phase of the programme foresees a three-day workshop in Lisbon’s Water Museum, where around 60 participants will come together to discuss current practices, procedures, needs, and challenges for mainstreaming gender at the European level and beyond. The workshop will include interactive sessions, plenaries, and presentations, with the participation of members of beneficiary authorities, experts, speakers, and project partners. The second workshop will be held in Greece, with a focus on gender impact assessment issues.
