Maria Demertzis is the Deputy Director at Bruegel, a Brussels-based economic think tank specialising in European policy. Demertzis will strengthen STG teaching and research on economic issues.

“I am delighted to join the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute, one of the most prestigious universities in Europe and a prime example of Europe’s ‘soft power’,” said Prof Maria Demertzis about her appointment. “I look forward to interacting with students and colleagues on issues of economic policy. The STG is an important convener of all relevant stakeholders in promoting European and global cooperation and I am honoured to be part of it.”

Florian Eder is member of POLITICO’s senior newsroom leadership team. As Executive Editor, Germany, he is shaping and implementing POLITICO’s expansion strategy. Eder will develop the STG’s work on the media in democratic societies.

“Independent journalism and a free press are key elements of democratic governance. I’m glad to help bring this perspective to the table,” commented Prof Florian Eder. “The School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute has made itself known as the place to think about governing beyond the nation state and I’m honoured to contribute to that.”

The two new professors take up part-time positions and will contribute across STG teaching and training, from the specialisation track in the Master of Transnational Governance to executive trainings for policy professionals.
