Processing the AISAM fonds (1963-2008) at the Historical Archives

In July 2019, the Association of Mutual Insurers and Insurance Cooperatives in Europe (AMICE) deposited the archival papers of the Association Internationale des Sociétés d'Assurance Mutuelle (AISAM) at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU). Covering the years 1963 to 2008, the fonds documents more than forty years of transnational cooperation among mutual and cooperative insurers in Europe.

In 2025, the HAEU completed the archival processing, description, and inventory of this deposit of 259 archival files, ensuring its long-term preservation and accessibility for academic research. The resulting file inventory reflects both functional and chronological criteria, enabling researchers to trace the AISAM’s institutional developments, policy discussions, and sectoral initiatives over time.

Scope and composition of the fonds

The AISAM fonds consists primarily of paper records spanning the association’s entire existence (1963–2008), prior to its merger with the Association of European Cooperative and Mutual Insurers (ACME) in January 2008. Since that date, the new entity has been known as AMICE.

The core series include:

  • Minutes and preparatory files of the General Assembly, Committee, Board, and Editorial Committee
  • Documentation produced by working groups
  • Records relating to members’ activities and sectoral cooperation
  • Foundational and statutory documents concerning the establishment of AISAM

The multilingual character of the association is reflected in the documentation. While French, English, German, and Spanish were the principal working languages, the files also contain materials in the national languages of member organisations.

In addition to textual records, the fonds contains some photographs and a limited number of audio and video tapes documenting congresses and other events.

Research value

With the completion of the inventory, the AISAM fonds are now accessible for consultation. The records could be of interest to scholars working on European economic integration, sectoral interest representation, and the history of mutual and cooperative insurance.

About the AISAM

Founded in 1963, AISAM was an association of private mutual insurance companies dedicated to fostering cooperation among its members and protecting the general interests of insurers operating on the principle of mutuality. Membership was open to duly incorporated private mutual insurance organisations from any country and across all branches of insurance.

In January 2008, AISAM merged with ACME (Association of European Cooperative and Mutual Insurers) to form AMICE, headquartered in Brussels. The new organisation assumed the activities and representative functions of both predecessor bodies, continuing to promote the interests of mutual and cooperative insurers at the European level.
