On 14 July, the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) announced the election of Simone Borghesi as their new President. 53% of the EAERE’s members took part in the election, marking an 8.5% increase from the most recent one in 2019. Borghesi was elected with 51.86% of the vote. In 2022 and 2023, he will take up the position of President-Elect, following which he will serve his two-year presidential term starting in January 2024. Subsequently, he will act as Past President for another two years.
The EAERE is an international scientific association dedicated to three main goals: contributing to the development and application of climate and environmental economics in Europe; encouraging climate and resource economics collaboration on climate and resource economics between scholars, policymakers, researchers; and developing cooperation across university and research institutions in Europe. Established in 1990, the association has today around 1.400 members in over 60 countries worldwide, ranging from academics, individuals in the public sector, policymakers, researchers and more. EAERE manages two official Journals, Environmental and Resource Economics (ERE) and Review of Environmental Economics and Policy (REEP) and organises its Annual Conference each summer.
Simone Borghesi, Full-time Professor of Economics at the University of Siena and Part-time Professor at the EUI, is also Director of the Florence School of Regulation – Climate. Borghesi offered his reaction to the election, “Thanks to all EAERE members for participating in the elections and for entrusting me: I am really honoured to be elected President and proud of representing the whole community”.
Discussing his plans as President-Elect, Borghesi mentioned, “the importance for EAERE to work closely with its members, in particular young researchers and PhDs, and intensify its effort to engage with policy makers, stakeholders as well as other national and European scientific associations. This, in turn, would increase the visibility and outreach of the association”.
