The Department of Economics (ECO) of the European University Institute runs one of Europe’s leading Ph.D. programmes and brings together scholars from all over Europe in a stimulating, innovative and outstanding research environment.

The Department is committed to the advancement of economics and to providing teaching and supervision to Ph.D. candidates at the highest international level. The research activities of the Department cover a wide range of topics in the fields of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. There are weekly seminars in all main fields given by top scholars from around the world, and a large number of high profile short-term and long-term visitors and post-doctoral fellows.

Research students, most of whom are awarded full financial support for four years, are offered extensive training - both in terms of courses, presentation skills and job market preparation. In addition, they receive close supervision by their main and second supervisor throughout the programme. They attend a full sequence of Ph.D. courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics, and a wide selection of advanced elective courses, at a level which will allow them to pursue successful academic careers in major universities or to hold prestigious positions at leading international institutions. In the past years our research students have been placed at top universities and institutions worldwide.
