Ransomware - WannaCry

You have probably heard of the latest global cyber-security threat referred to as WannaCry, aimed at disrupting digital services worldwide. This is a form of “ransomware”. Once such malware infects your computer, contents stored locally as well as on network shares are encrypted, rendering them inaccessible, and the user is asked to pay a ransom (hence the name of the threat) in order to be able to use them again.

There have been no reports of any such cyber attack on the Institute.

However, you should back up your data frequently and be extra-cautious about clicking on links in e-mails and on webpages.

For personal non-EUI devices using Windows, please ensure that the relevant Microsoft patches have been applied via Windows Update. You are advised to consult the Microsoft page Customer Guidance for WannaCrypt attacks.

If you are presented with a screen requesting payment to de-encrypt your data please switch off your device immediately and report it to the Helpdesk at +39 055-4685-600 (ext. 2600).
