The call for applications for the 2025-26 academic year (start date: 1 September 2025) will open in November 2024. The deadline for the submission of the complete application will be 31 January 2025 at 14:00 (CET). 

Selection process and schedule

  • 1 November: Application procedure opens.
  • 1st Round of Applications: Deadline for applications and references, 31 January.
  • 2nd Round of Applications: Deadline for applications and references, 15 March.
  • 3rd Round of Applications: Deadline for applications and references, 30 April.
  • February/March/April: Applications are assessed by the departmental selection committee. Pre-selected candidates may be invited for an interview.
  • By Mid-April at the latest: Candidates are informed of the selection results by e-mail. For 3rd round applicants, the selection results will be communicated in Mid-May.
  • May to July: Formal admission letters are sent by e-mail. Practical information for selected candidates is posted on the Academic Service's web pages. Reserve candidates may be contacted during this period if selected candidates withdraw.
  • End of August: Registration of new researchers, programme and courses start.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic record: Candidates are expected to have sufficient background in theory and research methodology relevant to the discipline (including mathematics, statistics and economics).
  • Language abilities: All candidates must have a good knowledge of English. The expected minimum level of English language proficiency is C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
  • GRE Test Scores: Candidates are normally requested to submit a GRE test score.
