The Secretary General of the European University Institute (EUI) plays a pivotal role in shaping the Institute’s strategic direction and external engagement. As the chief liaison with EU Member States, European Union institutions, and the Italian Government, the Secretary General leads institutional relations and oversees the accession process for non-member EU countries. The role involves strengthening the EUI’s partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organisations at all levels and enhancing its visibility internationally.
In addition to overseeing the governance of the High Council and Strategic Standing Committee, the Secretary General directs the Institute’s funding and alumni engagement strategies, oversees legal and compliance matters, and leads on cybersecurity, data protection, and risk management. As both the Chief Risk Officer and the Occupational Health and Safety Manager, the Secretary General ensures institutional resilience and regulatory compliance. The position also includes coordinating EUI real estate development in cooperation with relevant authorities.
As of 30 June 2025, the Secretary General of the EUI is Armando Barucco, former Ambassador of Italy to the Kingdom of Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
