What is intellectual history? How is it practiced? What distinguishes it from social, cultural and art history?
This seminar will examine different approaches to the study of ideas. In the process, it will discuss the evolution of historiography, the shifts between cultural and intellectual history, issues of scale and perspective, the linguistic and international turns. It will be concerned with theoretical statements about historiography but also engage with examples of application. Studying the history of ideas, ultimately, require clarifying the assumptions about the interconnection between power, ideologies and social structures that underlie any exercise in historical analysis.
