Data Protection Officer (DPO)

The internal regulation of the European University Institute (EUI) regarding Data Protection (President’s Decision No. 40 of 27 August 2013 regarding Data Protection at the EUI - Data Protection Policy) provides the appointment of a Data Protection Officer (DPO).

The EUI's President appointed Mr Günter Wilms as DPO for a term of three years starting from 1 November 2016.

The role, mandate and responsibilities of the DPO is –amongst others- to ensure that controllers respect their data protection obligations and data subjects are informed of their rights and obligations pursuant to President’s Decision 40/2013.

The DPO ensures in an independent manner, the internal application of the provisions of Decision 40/2013 and keeps a Data Protection Registry of the processing operations carried out by the controllers of the Institute.

The DPO also provides advice and makes recommendations for the practical improvement of data protection at the EUI. In critical situations, the DPO may investigate matters and incidents concerning compliance with the above-mentioned Decision.

The tasks of the DPO are set forth in Articles 16, 19 and 20 and the Annex I of President’s Decision No 40/2013. Those tasks have been described in further detail by:
