New publication: François Lamoureux, the Architect of Europe

Posted on 05 February 2018

The Historical Archives of the European Union are pleased to announce a new publication entitled “Francois Lamoureux:  an Architect of Europe”.

The book, published in December 2017 by the Jacques Delors Institute, recaps the presentations of experts and François Lamoureux’s relatives given at a seminar, by the same name, held in July 2016. The seminar was organized by the Jacques Delors Institut in partnership with the HAEU and Sciences Po Bordeaux and aimed at highlighting how his actions helped to shape the Europe we know today.

The book gathers testimonies and tributes made to François Lamoureux starting with those of his family, but also those of President Jacques Delors, his former chief of cabinet and advisor Pascal Lamy and Jean-Charles Leygues as well as Renaud Dehousse, current President of the European University Institute. Dieter Schlenker, Director of the HAEU, contributed to the book with a preface.

François Lamoureux, former deputy chief of the Cabinet of the Delors Commission, then Director General for Transport and Energy at the European Commission, and subject of this book is described as a passionate Europhile and a faithful craftsman of the European project.

On this occasion, the Historical Archives of the European Union also announced the opening of the François Lamoureux (1946-2006) archives to the public thanks to the deposit made by his widow, Christine Lamoureux in cooperation with the Secretariat General of the European Commission.

These archives give researchers a new fundamental source for the study of European  integration. With the exception of his debut at the General Secretariat of the Commission where he was in charge of relations with the Council, his entire career as a high official over 25 years between 1985 and 2005 is documented.

The files allow researchers to trace the history of the Commission in many aspects during this period: legal practice, institutional evolution (intergovernmental conferences, subsidiarity, Cetona and Plaza Working Groups), preparations for enlargement to Eastern Europe, Industrial, Energy and Transport Policies.

François Lamoureux’s private archives deposited at the HAEU can be accessed here.
