The archives of the European Parliament for the period 1989-1994 (PE3) now available for consultation

Posted on 12 February 2018

Following various transfers made between 2012 and 2016, 36, 856 new files mainly reflecting the legislative activity of the European Parliament are now available to researchers at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU).

These documents reflect the activities of the European Parliament and are a key source of information about the history of European integration. By examining the work of parliamentary committees  and delegations (reports, minutes) as well as session documents (parliamentary questions, minutes of plenary meetings), researchers can retrace the main events that characterized this period. This includes the impact of the German unification process on the European Community and the Maastricht Treaty, which marked the beginning of the evolution of Parliament towards adopting the role of co-legislator.

The PE3 fonds is the latest addition to the wider collection transferred by the EP Historical Archives. The PE fonds are organized, firstly under the activity of the Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community (1952 to 1958),  secondly from, 1958 to 1979, under the activity of the Parliament before the first European elections by direct universal suffrage (PE0), and finally, by legislature: PE1 (1979-1984), PE2 (1984-1989) and PE3 (1989-1994). Approximately 125,000 records can be consulted in the reading room.

For the period between 1952 and 1989, researchers can also find a series of documents from the governing bodies (Bureau, Presidents' Offices, Quaestors), which illustrate the administrative activity of the Institution.

Detailed inventories of all fonds from the Historical Archives of the European Parliament in Luxembourg will follow shortly.
