New files from the European Investment Bank available: Sir Brian Unwin's Presidency

Posted on 26 February 2021

The European Investment Bank (EIB) recently transferred 159 new files to the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) in Florence, which are now available for consultation in digital format on the HAEU online database.

150 of these files consist in a new series which brings together the speeches, interventions and addresses given on diverse occasions (EIB Board of Directors, EIB press conferences, various conferences, and official visits) by Sir Brian Unwin as President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) from 1993 to 1999. Sir Brian Unwin took office as President of the EIB and its Board of Directors on April 1, 1993, and was the first British to become President of this institution. He significantly contributed to the implementation of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Under his presidency, the EIB's operations greatly expanded, in particular with regard to investments in infrastructure projects on a European scale, thanks to the trans-European networks (TENs). He participated actively to the preparations for the Union’s enlargement and to the promotion of women’s role within the EIB. His various interventions and speeches are available mainly in English and some in French.

In addition, nine files which complete the series of the EIB publications are now available: they include the EIB annual activity reports for the years 2018 and 2019.

The EIB is the financial institution of the European Union created by the Treaties of Rome (1957) to contribute to regional development and economic cohesion. Its historical archives were deposited at the HAEU under the terms of a convention signed on the 1st of July 2005 with then EIB vice-president Gerlando Genuardi.
