Apply to be a Visitor

In the Department of History

Although the European University Institute is a small post-graduate institution, each year the Department of History receives many requests from external scholars who wish to follow our academic activities and carry out research in the EUI Library or Historical Archives of the European Union.

For practical reasons, the Department must be selective in approving such requests. Precedence is given to visiting fellows or students whose research interests relate directly to work being carried out within the Department.

The status of visiting fellow or visiting student does not involve any financial commitment on the part of the Institute: all fellows or students must be self-financed or supported by another institution.

Visiting Fellows

Post-doctoral scholars may be appointed as Visiting Fellows. Grants are not allocated for this kind of fellowship and the Department assumes that fellows are self-financed. Before applying to become Visiting Fellows, applicants should check whether a simple application to the Library as External User would cover their needs. See the Library access policy for external users.

Visiting Fellows may participate in all EUI academic activities and use the Library. Unfortunately, the Department is not in a position to offer office space or secretarial assistance.

Applicants should contact a faculty member to ascertain whether there is some interest in the department for the proposed research topic. Applications should include the following:

  • purpose of the visit (title and description of the research to be pursued at the Institute)
  • dates when the visit is envisaged
  • the name of the faculty member who will serve as the liaison professor
  • curriculum vitae

Applications will be considered according to the following deadlines:

  • by 3 January
  • by 30 April
  • by 30 September

Requests must be approved by the Department and the Executive Committee. The decision will be announced about one month after the deadline. For more information please contact:  [email protected]

Visiting Students / Incoming Exchange Students

Students registered in a similar post-graduate programme at another university or institute may be appointed as Visiting Students. The normal stay is 1-6 months. Visits of 6-10 months must be approved by the Entrance Board and in no case may a visit exceed 10 months.

Students registered at a university holding an active agreement with the EUI (Erasmus+, Bilateral Agreement, CIVICA, US Exchange) may be appointed as Exchange Students. Interested students should contact their International Relations Office to ensure that the home university has an active agreement with the EUI, and to determine the total duration of the stay.

Before applying to become Visiting/Exchange Student, applicants should check whether a simple application to the Library as External User would cover their needs. See the Library access policy for external users.

The policy of the Department is not to offer individual guidance and advice on PhD applications and dissertation proposals. Visiting/Exchange Students who wish to apply for the PhD programme are asked to not contact potential supervisors for advice on their applications but to consult the department’s web pages where research themes are listed.

Visiting/Exchange Students have a non-degree student status at the EUI. They may take part in all EUI academic activities and use the Library, but are not entitled to a working space. The Department does not issue a certificate of attendance to Visiting Students. The European University Institute is not an Italian university and should not be considered as such for the purpose of a research visit.

Applications should include the following:

  • purpose of the visit
  • dates when the visit is envisaged
  • outline of current PhD research
  • contact details of the supervisor of the research for a supporting reference (referees will receive an e-mail with a direct link to submit their reference letter online)
  • curriculum vitae

Applications will be considered according to the following deadlines:

  • by 31 January for a visit in the 3rd term (April-June)
  • by 30 April for a visit in the 1st term (October-December)
  • by 31 October for a visit in the 2nd term (January-March)

The decision will be announced about one month after the deadline. For more information please contact: [email protected]
