Visiting the Law Department

The Department of Law admits a limited number of external scholars who wish to do research in the Library and participate in academic activities. The Department receives many requests, and must be very selective and limit the number of visitors here at any one time.

Precedence is given to scholars whose research interests relate directly to work being carried out in the department and are of particular interest to one or more of the Department’s teaching staff.

The Department does not admit visitors for the sole purpose of following seminars, nor do we make such appointments during July-August when there are no academic activities.

Prospective applicants are kindly asked not to contact professors via email. Professors cannot provide information on the application process, indicate in advance whether they will sponsor them, or issue invitation letters before the selection process has been completed. Applications sent by email will not be considered.

Visitors must be entirely self-financed as the department has no funds to support them. We are unable to offer either administrative assistance or telephone expenses

How to apply

Post-doctoral scholars or the equivalent may be appointed as Visiting Fellows. All requests must be approved first by the Law Department and then by the Executive Committee of the Academic Council.

The length of the visit must be of at least one month and no more than six months. Fellows cannot be appointed during July-August when there are no academic activities. In order to be fair to all applicants, repeated appointments as Visiting Fellow will not be made. Please note that the period of stay must be entirely self-funded. Fellows are encouraged to participate in departmental activities, such as the Faculty Seminar (held monthly), as well as the Law working groups events. While in residence at the EUI, fellows are also expected to be available to meet with Law researchers sharing their academic interests and to discuss their research projects. These exchanges are informal and are not intended to constitute thesis supervision. Fellows may also be invited to contribute to teaching activities.

To apply for Visiting Fellow, you must register here within the set deadlines listed below, if you already registered then you must login and fill out the relevant application form (Visiting Fellow LAW application form). Please indicate in the application form one or more current professors of the EUI Law Department whose research interests are closest to your own.

Only applications submitted by the deadlines will be considered. For additional information please contact LawAdmin@eui.eu

Applications must include purpose and dates of the visit (max. 1 page), a curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages), a summary of the research project (max. 100 words) and a 1-page research project plan.

The Department will only assess complete applications.

Deadlines for applications

All applications for the appointment of Visiting Fellows will be considered at departmental meetings twice a year according to the following deadlines:

  • 30 September. Decisions will be communicated in October. This deadline applies to visits starting in January of the following calendar year. Due to the internal approval procedures required, decisions cannot be communicated before the dates indicated above
