Teaching Practice and Teaching Placements are part of the EUI PhD programme’s broader framework for scholarly and professional development. Combined with teaching training provided by the Scholars Hub in Academic Service, they enable early stage researchers to apply their teaching training in practice, build confidence as teachers and prepare for academic and other professional careers.
Teaching Practice
Teaching Practice opportunities enable doctoral researchers to put their teaching training into practice in an academic setting. With support from the Scholars Hub, researchers can apply their knowledge of course and module design, while reflecting on their classroom approach and developing their teaching skills.
These opportunities normally involve being hosted as a guest lecturer at a partner institution, under the guidance of the course’s main instructor. The engagement is limited to just a few sessions and a few hours of teaching. This provides a focused opportunity to gain classroom experience and contribute to a course through the researcher’s academic expertise.
Researchers can prepare their lecture or class with support from the Scholars Hub’s pedagogical experts, in consultation with their doctoral supervisor and the host instructor. Preparation may include structuring the session and selecting teaching methods.
The host instructor is encouraged to provide constructive feedback following the session. Researchers can use this feedback to reflect on their teaching, identify areas for development and document their experience as guest lecturers at a partner institution in their teaching portfolio or academic CV.
Teaching Practice opportunities are normally unpaid and are intended to complement teaching training through practical experience. Participation is entirely voluntary and does not form part of any mandatory requirement associated with the teaching training offered by the Scholars Hub to doctoral researchers.
Opportunities and funding
Teaching Practice may be combined with participation in an Exchange Programme. Researchers can explore the exchange options available through their department to identify destinations where they may be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant to support a combined exchange and Teaching Practice period.
To be considered for this funding, researchers must participate in the relevant Exchange Programme and complete the required application process. Alternatively, specific calls may offer Teaching Practice opportunities with an Erasmus+ grant. Eligibility criteria and application requirements will be detailed in each call.

Prerequisite: Researchers must complete the Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education course before starting their Teaching Practice.
Teaching Placements
Teaching Placements offer doctoral researchers the opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience at a host university. They provide a practical setting in which to develop teaching skills and become familiar with the academic environment of another institution.
Unlike Teaching Practice opportunities, Teaching Placements may be paid, depending on the terms established by the host university. The host institution determines the responsibilities, duration and, where applicable, remuneration for each placement.
